Charles Sheridan Brown DPE Checkride Gouges

As of this writing, only one report is on file for Charles Sheridan Brown, an instrument checkride flown from KMLB on September 23, 2023. The oral ran about an hour, which the pilot found short. It started roughly an hour late because Brown was finishing another checkride that ran long. Plan for a possible wait and stay patient.

He opened with the basics, confirming required flight time and documents. Then he checked that the airplane was airworthy and inspections were current. The pilot tabbed everything and had photos of the aircraft documents in a binder, so this part went fast. Brown also liked seeing a battered, well-used ACS instead of a clean one.

Brown covered why you need an instrument rating, required equipment, and how to maintain currency. He asked about the IPC and what it involves. He seemed to choose just one item from each ACS section and dig into that. Much of the oral was built around the pilot's cross country route, KMLB to KGNV.

The weather section was detailed. He asked about types of icing and how it hurts you, including the changing wing shape and added weight. He wanted the elements of AIRMETs, SIGMETs, and Convective SIGMETs. He asked about the limits of the weather tools onboard and whether the pilot would go that day. Clear skies up north made it a go.

Preparation carried the oral. The pilot printed a route overview, winds aloft, METARs, TAFs, airport diagrams, a NAV log, and NOTAMs the night before. Having it all in front of Brown kept him from digging deeper. He did ask where the aircraft performance numbers came from, and the answer was the POH. The report ends mid sentence on the one missed item, so the flight portion is not described here.
