Andrew Gray, CFI-II 1,500+ hrs · Former US Navy & Boeing · Data methodology

James Briggs comes across as friendly and easy going from the first minute. The one report on file describes a CFI mentality that makes the room feel positive, not cold. He starts by checking all logbooks, including 141 logbooks, for accuracy and proper signatures. He then reviews your PIC documents and form 8710 before dismissing your instructor.

When the applicant's 8710 had a mistake, Briggs pointed to the exact error. He led the pilot back through IACRA step by step and showed how to fix it. He gives a semi-formal oral brief, lists all possible outcomes, and names each ACS area he will test. He collects his fee just before the oral questioning begins.

The oral followed a logical order and ran about 30 minutes from check in to finish. He built scenarios around PAST, SMACFUM, and the propeller and landing gear systems. Be ready for high density altitude scenarios at KFLG, KPRC, and similar fields. He does not want to hear about easy performance at a low elevation like Gateway. He wants to know how the airplane performs in the harshest conditions, so you stay competent with family or paying customers aboard.

He debriefed the oral as satisfactory and then briefed the flight. Expect many engine failures during the flight portion. He lets you order the maneuvers, landings, and approach however you prefer, as long as you complete each required task. He also tells you to follow company policy at your discretion.

As of this writing, only one report is on file for James Briggs. It paints him as someone who has worked hard to perfect his plan of action and questioning. If you fly with him soon, add your own notes so the next pilot knows more.

James Briggs brings a CFI mindset to the checkride and wants more pilots in the sky. He keeps things friendly, walks you through IACRA fixes step by step, and tells you exactly what the ACS covers before you start. His flight portion packs in engine failures and lets you order the maneuvers your way.
